Plane crashes into Lake Chelan; 2 dead

Two people died on Saturday when their float plane crashed into Lake Chelan near the remote resort community of Stehekin in the North Cascades. The plane was carrying 5 people total.
A charter flight from Chelan Airways, the single-engine DeHavilland Beaver had taken off from the town of Chelan about 4:30 p.m. Approximately 15 minutes later it crashed, flipping onto its top as it tried to land at Stehekin. This was according to Jeff Middleton, chief criminal deputy for the Chelan County sheriff’s department.

Middleton said that those killed were a woman from Stehekin and a man. The male pilot and a female were taken to a hospital in Chelan, and the fifth person, a 16-year-old girl, was unhurt, he said.

Also according to Middleton, the dead man and the injured woman were believed to be husband and wife. Their hometowns were not available. The conditions of the injured man and woman, who suffered at least hypothermia, were not immediately available.

Middleton said that The National Transportation Safety Board would investigate the cause of the plane crash.
