Snohomish County Truck and Car Accident Injures One and Blocks Highway 9

Highway 9 in Maltby was blocked for about an hour Thursday afternoon by a three-vehicle pileup. Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said that one person was hurt and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to Leary, a semi-truck that was heading north hit a passenger car that was pulling out of a residential area near 203rd Street SE, at about 2pm. A 68 year old man from Kirkland was driving a pickup truck southbound. The driver braked to avoid the collision, but the semi crossed the center line and the two trucks collided head-on.

The man had to be helped out of his truck by Snohomish County Fire District 7 rescue crews before being rushed to the hospital.

Leary also said that about 20 gallons of diesel fuel spilled and was contained on the side of the road. The cleanup was expected to be monitored by State Department of Ecology crews.

Metrolink spokeswoman Denise Tyrrell said that a preliminary investigation found that "it was a Metrolink engineer that failed to stop at a red signal and that was the probable cause" of Friday's collision with a freight train in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. "When two trains are in the same place at the same time somebody's made a terrible mistake," said Tyrrell. The engineer was one of the 25 dead. Of the 25 people killed in the wreck, many had been in the front car of the Metrolink train, which was crushed in the wreck.

In addition to the 25 dead, 135 people were injured, and 81 of those were transported to hospitals in serious or critical condition. Many were described as having crush injuries.

One firefighter who pulled bodies from the wreckage said he had never seen such devastation. "We saw bodies where the metal had been pushed together and ... we cut them out piece by piece. They were trapped in the metal," he said.
